Went and got my hair cut. Love the polished cement floor in the salon. This might be something we do to our basement floor.
Picked up stuff at Lowes and ordered our wall oven, cook top, and trash compactor. They won’t be in until early November.
Look at this car that was parked at Lowe’s. Wow! Is this even legal. Would love to meet the owner.
Headed to the Mellow Mushroom for lunch with my Daughter-in-law. Great southern chain restaurant. The salad was huge and delicious. We had a really nice day together.

The smell in our compound by the Mimosa tree is disgusting, but so worth it. There are thousands of dead flies in the trap.
Lowes sold us some bad, old Type S cement bags. We think people buy it, it gets damp and then they return it. There are such big rock chunks in it that these bags are unusable.
Hay is down on the stone and backfilling can begin.
Many window screens were delivered ripped. Door looks a little damaged also.
Backfilling is going great. French drain out the back of the property is looking good.
Lots of work. All that lumber and lots more will go into this house.
The front door is being stored on the old house’s back porch. It is covered to protect it from the elements. The old house just got very dark. The door is covering the window.
Working on plastering , and covering the French drains with gravel. We want to backfill the house as soon as we can. Once backfilled it will be easier to get into the foundation and it sturdies everything up.
Also spent time planning Kitchen designs with the help of some beautiful hummingbirds. We are going to have a stainless range hood like pictured and small glass cabinets with lights over our top cabinets.

Flies, flies and more flies. We bought some fly traps and hung one by the porch. I thought there was something dead under the house today. Kept walking around trying to figure out what the horrible smell was. Then I realized it was the fly trap. What a horrendous smell.
First floor framing is going up quickly and it looks fantastic.
It is amazing the number of nails we are using. Always buying more.
Working on another lumber list.
And of course there is always another different bug.

Happy July 4th – Today was a relaxing day at the building site. Did some clean up but nothing big was accomplished. We hung around and the yard bunny came to visit.
We made a trip to Lowes for Lag bolts to connect the Lally columns to the main girder.
The farmers put up a large fireworks display in the evening. Beautiful to watch from our picnic table.

Our cabin water is delivered via a house from the old house. It makes it difficult to mow the lawn. If you don’t move the hose and try to go over it, we have no water. Well you ask how do I know that? Trust me it is from experience.
A lot of time was spent today replacing the temporary adjustable columns with the custom made Lally columns we had made and shipped from Quality Way Products in Michigan. These new columns support 32,790 pounds each. The old temporary columns supported one third of that amount. We feel more comfortable with the high load bearing columns.
Tomorrow is the fourth of July, so we hung a flag in celebration of the Independence Day holiday.
Framing continues.
They are verifying and ensuring there are nailers in all the corners. Nailers are needed to screw the sheetrock to.
The view from the first floor windows is outrageously gorgeous.
Steve gave me instructions before bed on how to hold and shoot the BB gun. He says the scope is really accurate. We are Living the Dream and I am Annie Oakley I think.

Went to Berea, KY today to have lunch with my Granddaughter and Great Grandson. It was a beautiful warm sunny day. Berea is an artsy town and is home to Berea College. My son graduated from Berea College. Berea is the only one of America’s top colleges that awards every enrolled student a no-tuition promise. No student pays for tuition.
After walking around town and visiting some really interesting craft stores we had lunch in a small Italian restaurant in the center of town. Spencer is such a well behaved 15 month old. It is amazing. His parents taught him sign language as a baby before he could actually speak. It is very cool to watch his mother and him sign. He can speak very well now, but they tend to do both, sign and talk.
After spending the day with them I headed back to the building site and was pleasantly surprised with how much Steve and Justin accomplished. It is really looking like a house and the header for the front door is being installed.
We added a BB gun to our cabin protection. Hope we never have to use either the bat or the BB gun. We may shoot our eye out!

Sundays we have started going to Cracker Barrel for Breakfast. It is good to do something once a week besides work all day.
After breakfast we did laundry and then came home and did a few videos of what the house looks like now. First video is main floor and second one is the basement.
Standing on the first floor is very exciting and the views are beautiful.
The number of bugs around here are incredible. Look at this KY bug on our shower. How disgusting is that.
It started to rain in the afternoon and the tractor trailer driver could not make it to our house with the custom made Lally columns. We had to meet the tractor trailer at the highway. He was parked at the side of the highway and we backed up to the door of the trailer. Steve and the driver then moved the cement filled steel columns from the tractor trailer into the bed of our truck.
We will replace the temporary ones with these.

Bought a full length mirror. I can now actually see how I look everyday.
The round mirror is the cruise ship port hole. Laying in bed at night I can dream about the waves out there rocking me to sleep. Or is is the rain and high winds. Steve is amazed that I need three mirrors in a small cabin. I do love my mirrors
Our weapon sits behind the door. Ha, let someone come in and bother us. Baseball bat is the best weapon you can have. We always keep one under our bed. Can’t do that with an air bed.
First floor framing continues. It is rising out of the ground.
The farmer is putting down herbicide we think

We are starting to look at kitchen layouts. Have to figure a design that works with all the windows and doorways we have. It appears the room may be a little narrow to add in an island. We are thinking a peninsula will work better with a sink in it. This design has an island. We like the range hood and the double wall microwave oven in this layout.
We have my family reunion coming up. I am getting excited, we have been planning this Ortega Hershey Park reunion for a year. The t-shirts are in and look great. I love the bright yellow. It will be so easy for everyone to stay together with that color. Can’t lose site of that yellow shirt. It is bright!
It is so hot and sunny that we put a canopy and fan on the first floor deck. The saw was getting so hot that they were burning their hands while operating the mitre saw.
This huge Mimosa tree is really pretty. The leaves look like ferns and the flowers like pink puffballs. It just keeps blooming and attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. This tree is native to the Middle East and Asia. I really like it so far in the yard. We have had to trim it already. It grows very fast. I have read people hate it in the fall. We will see, it is my first experience with one.
At five PM it is 95 in the shade. It is really hot and humid here.
All our cooking is done on a gas grill and an electric one burner hot plate. Starting to get really good at one pot meals.
It is a pleasure to go and rest in the cabin where it is cool. It is small though, the one room is the bathroom and bedroom. Mirrors make it appear a little larger.

The mud wasps are moving in before we can get in. We just keep buying cans of bee spray and knocking their nests down.
Have you ever thought about how many nails it takes to build a 2,800 square foot home? We are estimating we are going to use around 28,000 nails. That is 10 nails per square foot. Kind of amazing when you think about it.
Another interesting thing is when you are building a house, you don’t need extra exercise equipment. The bending, lifting, and stretching is part of your work all day long. Although, it is more hazardous than gym workouts and not as calorie burning as more vigorous forms of exercise, like running, cycling or circuit training. Additionally the repetitiveness can cause injuries. The weight is dropping off Steve and I am still exercising with equipment.

Lots of great progress again today. It is very exciting to watch the house rise up from the ground. The structure is getting sturdier now that the outside wall sheathing is on the basement and the first floor sheathing is going down. We are using 15/32 plywood and not OSB board. Steve doesn’t like OSB board. His opinion is that plywood is much stronger and weather resistant. Everything is being nailed with a nail gun, which is unusual for us. Justin is an expert at using the nail gun. Steve calls him the “Nail Gun King”.

The town is constantly cutting back the weeds on the side of the road. They grow very fast in this area. It does slow your travels down a little though. Science Hill, KY does a great job with keeping their roads maintained. There are no potholes, but of course they use very little salt and not much if any plowing goes on from what I hear. I do hear that the ice storms are horrendous though. They just close the schools when the roads get ice covered, wait for the temperatures to rise, and the ice to melt. Our plan is to be cruising for the total winter time. See you in the Spring!!
Steve takes a foundation seriously. He always says if the foundation is no good the house is not worth fixing. That is why we are not fixing the existing house.
The framing now seems to be progressing quickly. The first floor box sill and floor joists are moving along.
We found these adjustable Jackposts and replaced the wood supports with them. They will be replaced with Lally columns as soon as we can locate them. These adjustable ones do not support the weight that we want. A Lally column is a concrete-filled cylindrical steel structural column. Steve used to have them made to the size he needed at the local Steel company in New Jersey. I am looking to have three made by a steel manufacturing company in Michigan and shipped here.

The progress today was incredible. The basement walls are framed. We are looking for three Lally columns for the basement girder. Temporarily wood has been used. It appears as though we will need to have some ordered out of the area and delivered. It is standard construction in the Northeastern part of the United States, but it is unheard of in Kentucky.

It is a beautiful 62 degrees and a great day to work on the house sill.
We are up early and starting the day with big smiles. So ready to work with the first wood.
The wood is uncovered and the pieces needed for the sill are pulled out.
First the sill sealer is placed down. This is something I can actually carry, unlike those cement blocks.
Then two 2X6’s are bolted and nailed to the foundation.
The basement is five feet of block and 4 feet of wood. The basement windows are in the wood and block.
While I cooked dinner, Steve carried buckets of stone from the pile in front of the house and covered the side drainage pipes.
Ended the day with Patty Melt’s and fresh green beans. A lot of work was accomplished today. We are energized and very happy.

and some excavating was done to level a spot nice and close to the foundation for our lumber to be placed.
And here it is – The first of many loads of lumber is delivered. It is a very exciting day.
Some of the plywood was a little damaged and at 71.00 a sheet. They are replacing with no problem.
I had to lay on my new house! Awe so nice.
After delivery I went shopping and out to lunch with my Granddaughter Koral to celebrate.

While it stormed we worked on another lumber order.
After the storm damage we were able to repair the broken canopy.
There is water around the foundation again.
The French drains are in and the stone is being placed over the piping.
Headed to Lowe’s in the evening. OMG the price of 15/32 plywood is $73.25. That is incredibly high. It has tripled in price due to Covid shortages. We are getting most of our lumber from Lumber King and they are charging $71.00 a sheet. That is still very high. Wonder where the lumber prices will end up. All lumber is really high priced right now. It appears as though we will be paying a premium for building materials.

Stayed in Clarksburg, West Virginia last night at the Hilton Garden Inn. We got up early and headed to McDonalds drive thru for breakfast. They must certainly like their syrup and butter in this state. They provided four packages of syrup and four packages of butter for three small pancakes. Imagine how much product is thrown away and wasted if this location gives this excess amount out for every order. Then imagine if every McDonalds in the country gave the same amount. Think of all the people that could be fed. It is terrible to waste this much food.
We arrived in Kentucky early in the day. This state has such beautiful countryside.
Arrived home in time to have some Kentucky Blueberries from R Family Farm owned and operated by Justin and his family. This farm will be certified organic next year. Apparently, there is a few years waiting period from the time they bought it. They produce the best blueberries we have ever eaten. Very sweet and a nice juicy texture.

Today was all about the recital and taking pre recital pictures. Three generations of women. The oldest was never a dancer though.
Then headed to the venue which was at a camp due to Covid-19. The Cicadas sounds were overwhelming in the parking lot.
Jenna came out of dancing retirement and performed in the parents dance. The parents dance was very professional. I was amazed that the studio had so many accomplished dancers for parents. The recital was excellent. I always love watching them. Julianna really loves her dance. These are two very talented beautiful women. Look how happy they are to be dancing.
After recital we started driving home.

Then headed back to the house to hang out and play with the Cicadas. Well, at least the kids played with them. I think they are gross. They love to walk around holding them though. I really don’t understand the infatuation they have with them.
Then of course more tween selfies. Don’t leave a phone near a tween.

We had a fun relaxing day spent with a few of our Grand children. The oldest sibling in her family found my phone very amusing. Love the faces. Tweens are so cute.

We spent last night at the Hilton Garden Inn in Clarksburg, West Virginia. We are headed to our daughter’s house in Pennsylvania for our granddaughter’s annual dance recital. There was no way we were missing this special event. We also could use a little time away from the compound. Due to Covid-19, we had to order our breakfast the night before from a limited menu for a specific time.
The hotel room felt huge after living in a ten by twelve cabin.
The funny thing is our cabin’s air mattress is more comfortable then the hotel bed.
The bathroom and inside shower were also very big.
It was nice to shower inside, but I was amazed that the shower head spray and water pressure is much nicer in our outdoor shower.
After breakfast, we checked out and drove the rest of the way to our daughter’s house in Pennsylvania.
On the drive, we figured out what lumber we wanted delivered. We ordered it from Lumber King building supply. It will be delivered on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 after our return. We have to keep our unattached building materials close to $10,000. We will be ordering smaller amounts of materials, because our builder’s risk policy will cover for theft for unattached building material up to $10,000. Wood is very expensive now due to the pandemic. It is like gold and due to that there is a higher than normal risk of theft.
We had a fun dinner with a who could make the best milk mustache contest with our grandsons.
After dinner, Steve had a little one on one treatment for his tennis elbow.
Today’s product recommendations are for laundry days: 1) Since I have been doing my clothes at the laundromat my delicates have been ruined. So using some mesh laundry bags has helped. These are great, and 2) of course some nice laundry baskets. This way laundry is sorted and ready to put in the washers. Here’s the links to these products:
Went to the casino today – lol the laundromat. The big difference is when you go to the casino you can leave with more money then you walked in with. When you go to the laundromat, you always leave with less money.
French drain pipes are all in and look great. The water will drain out of the back of the house and never get in the basement. No sump pump will be needed. They now need to be covered with hay and foundation backfilled.
Cap blocks are completed on right side of foundation and half of the back wall. Wood sill will need to go on once completed. The basement walls will be half cement block and half wood.

Today was another hot apply the sunscreen and wear a big hat work day.
I got away from the sun and went to a really nice nail salon in Somerset, where I was pampered with a manicure and pedicure.
French drains are in.
Came home and cooked Beef Quesadillas on the grill.
After dinner sat, relaxed, and enjoyed my new blue summer nails and the view. Great energizing day today!
Today’s product recommendations are for removing gel polish. I remove mine before going to the salon. I don’t want any dremel used on my nails and I really don’t like to have my fingers in acetone. Therefore I use these items I purchased from amazon: 1) The acetone is placee on, and 2) A cotton pad cut in half, and 3) A plastic cap placed on, and 4) after about ten minutes the little tool with the triangle end is used to gently push the softened gel off the nail with little nail damage. Here’s the links to these products:
This morning we got up a little discouraged after the canopy fiasco yesterday.
The canopies are all garbage now, except the original that we bought about ten years ago. That one we had over the picnic table and the spikes hammered in the ground. It is amazing how far the wind pulled them out of the ground.
The foundation is a little flooded today. This seems to be an everyday occurrence. Steve continued laying block, until he came across the bad Type S cement mix. These are the old bags on the lower pallet that someone must have bought and returned. When they get old they get huge chunks in them and can’t be mixed.
He worked on putting cap blocks in with anchor bolts which will be used to connect the wodden sill. We have never used cap blocks before, but always used semi solid ones which are easier to put the anchor bolts in.
Worked so hard he killed a 30 year old trowel.
It was dry enough later in the day where he was able to work on tarring the foundation.
I worked on trying to make the cabin feel a little more homey. Added flowers to the wall by the bed. Steve is calling it a chic cabin now.
Today’s product recommendations are: 1) The Quest canopy is the best. It survived 10 years and even that old it made it through a bad windy storm. Five other canopies did not. This brand is fantastic, and 2) Pvc wall decals are fantastic. You put them up in pieces so you actual make your design. There are many different designs. Instead of painting a design, use your artistic eye and put up these decals. Here’s the links to these products:
The birds are lined up on the wires enjoying the show. They are making jokes and laughing at the big birds playing in the mud. “Hey Carl, get everyone from the Jones house wire. This show is better and funnier than watching TV through their window. Wilma – bring some snacks, looks like we will be here awhile” . The birds are thoroughly enjoying themselves.
We tried to tar the foundation today, but it was way to wet and rainy even under the canopies. So, we have to wait till it dries a little.
It was a good afternoon to go have some fun at Lowes. We bought twelve bags of type S mason mix. You have to love some of their employees. Today, they provided a prime example of how not to treat your customers. The guys loading the truck didn’t want to be there or were just having a really bad day. They told us that they didn’t get paid enough to load trucks. Wow!! So since they were upset about it, they proceeded to throw the bags into the back of our truck. We also asked for them to give us newer bags that were on a skid up on a higher shelf. They told us we were getting what was on the lower pallets. Well we got home and most of the bags were broken in and were all over our truck. It was a fun time cleaning up the truck.
After the Lowe’s fiasco we get home and a wicked storm had hit the area while we were at Lowes. And of course we left our canopies up and not anchored. They blew out of the foundation area and are destroyed. The birds are really enjoying this s**t show now. I bet they are calling more of their friends and recommending they come and join them. LOL
Everyone keeps asking why we don’t just live in the old house. Here’s some pictures that explain why this old house is getting demolished.
Okay time for a drink. Of course doing after dinner dishes is always fun. Tomorrow will be brighter. Good Night!

Hard to get a foundation done when it just pours everyday.
The foundation just fills up with water.
You can no longer just walk into the foundation area. So, Steve put up some boards to get into the foundation. So now it is walk the plank ye Matey’s to get into the foundation. Then down the ladder. I can get into the foundation work area easily now.
The flies, spiders, and ticks are horrendous. My legs and arms have huge welts on them. Steve used bug killer around the cabin and house. Hopefully, we will get rid of some of them.
Steve has taken to mixing the Type S cement a bag at a time.
Today it poured, he dumped the cement before it hardened in the wheelbarrow. He figured he was done for the day.
Well, you know you know what happened. Of course, as soon as he dumped the wheelbarrow and cleaned up all his tools. The rain stopped and the weather became nice enough to work again.
Go figure. The farmer’s rubber muck boots and those canopies are life savers.
Today’s product recommendations are: 1) Masonry hand tool set, and 2) a canopy. Both of these items were an absolute necessity. Here’s the links to these products:
Woke up this morning to a very wet open trunk. Steve carries the car key fob in his pocket and bends over and opens the trunk. We have had this happen in hotels and the trunk has been filled with snow. We now make sure, when that our hotel rooms overlooks the parking lot where our car is. He also takes his keys out of his pocket and sets them on the nightstand and then verifies the trunk is closed. He needs to do this with our cabin.
We trimmed all the trees around the yard. They had taken over where you couldn’t drive the riding mower near the trees. If you go under the trees, the ticks just jump right on you. It is so disgusting, we have to check each other for ticks every night. And if one is stuck and you ask Steve to grab it, he grabs your skin with it. I have a huge welt in my neck because he thought he was only getting the tick. Hopefully, trimming the trees will take care of the tick issue.
Went to the casino, aka the laundromat today. Just feeding the quarters in. The difference with this casino is that there is no way you are walking out with more money than you walked in with.
Driving down the country roads to the laundromat is scary. The corn surrounds you and reminds me of “The Children of the Corn”.
Received my new Teal folding chairs. I love them, they are so comfortable and nice.
Water is flooding around the foundation, but starting to dry out.
Block work continues under the canopies.
We are moving along, Steve worked on creating the first lumber order.
Today’s product recommendations are: 1) Shears for tree and bush pruning, and 2) These tick removal tools. Here’s the links to these products:
Our mornings start with eggs on the electric griddle. So glad we brought the griddle with us. Sorry Jeff, bacon is once a week at Cracker Barrel.
We hung up hooks for our towels to dry in the cabin. So not used to reusing towels for more than one shower. We are using for two showers now that we are washing clothes at the Laundromat. We normally use once and they just go right in the washing machine. I always wonder what part of my body did I use the first time, as I dry my face from the second shower. Eeew!!
Steve started working on the foundation early. He mixed cement and then the pouring rain hit.
Threw away cement and it got nice. Go figure. Then the next storm blew in and he just sat on the porch in disbelief.
Then it was back to work under the canopies. Strange weather today.
He placed plastic over the walls as he plastered them to hopefully protect them. We don’t want the plaster to just wash off.
Thank goodness for those canopies, or today would have been a wasted day.
The water is laying around the foundation now and there are a ton of frogs loving it. Unlike us, we would like it dry.
Our John Deere tractor arrived today.
We bought this tractor for me to mow the lawn. So of course, I took it around the yard. OMG – what a disaster, it was like riding a “BUCKING BRONCO”. I had to hang on or get thrown off. The yard is so rough that you just bounce all over. I could not stop laughing as I rode around. Steve kept saying slow down, but you have to realize, I have never ever mowed a lawn before.
As I was cooking dinner on the back porch and eyeing the Green eyed monster and thinking, I do not want to ever get back on you.
Steve just started mowing the back yard. Oh yes, I am so happy.
Mowing in the backyard is hard. There are hoses and electrical lines everywhere that have to be moved. Along with the picnic table and our dining canopy.
Today’s product recommendations are: 1) The electric griddle we use all the time. We use everyday in our kitchen, here at our building site, we take to the Outer Banks to use in vacation home rentals, and we have taken camping. We love this griddle, and 2) These really great strong hooks. Here’s the links to these products:
