Day 219 – “Living the Dream”. Sunday, 12/05/2021. Sunday is our funday and of course the laundromat day. Not much accomplished on the house, but we now have a nice welcome door mat.
The house is slowly turning into a home.
Today’s product recommendations are for your front door: 1) Lovely front door welcome mat, and 2) Blink outdoor cameras and echo show to see who is coming to your front door. Here’s the links to these products:
Day 186 – “Living the Dream”. It was in the 40’s and cloudy all day today.
I am not a happy camper. It brings back memories of tent camping in New York State on the Delaware River and it snowed. We went bowling to get out of the cold. Thi sis not fun and there will be no bowling here. We are WORKING. It was a good day to make and eat homemade chicken noodle soup. It definitely warms a body up.
The back deck is almost complete. It may not get stained until the spring. In order to stain it has to be 55 degrees for 24 hours.
The water heater is connected. Steve just has to set up the system for pressure testing and run the pipes to the septic.
The lower level is getting completed quickly now. Justin is finishing up the framing.
All day I planned on taking my shower at 4pm when it was going to be the warmest at 49 degrees. I did the dishes at 3:30pm and was headed to the shower when the gutter installers came back. Ugg, there went the shower. They were headed up on the house. These guys are not used to such high houses. Steve and Justin helped them with setting up the ladders. They did not have ladders long enough for the job and had to use ours. Actually, Steve went up on the roof to do some nailing because they could not do it.
They finally left at 7pm. It was 41 degrees and getting dark quickly. Okay I had to take a shower; my hair was gross. So, I get in the shower, it is dark, and the coyotes are going crazy. It was super scary.
Got out of the shower and ran for the Cabin. The cabin is nice and cozy warm tonight.
Hmm. Planet fitness showering is sounding better and better.

Day 185 – The HVAC rough in is about 3/4 of the way completed
and the Gutter installers were here today and will finish tomorrow. Progress, progress, progress. They are putting six-inch gutters up. Up North six inch is used for commercial. Here the rain is intense, and six inch is needed.
The home is coming together nicely. Steve is progressing right along with the plumbing rough in.
Justin worked on the lower-level framing in the morning and took off the afternoon to work on one of his six rental units.
I love the back deck and the fact that I can climb the stairs and get on it. What a view, I have to keep taking pictures

Day 184 – “Living the Dream”. Happy Halloween. First Halloween at the compound here. They did trick or treating last night, and no one showed at our house. We are in the country and it is really a work site. Maybe next year.
Today was our Sunday Funday Haha. More like a Sunday workday. I used my witch’s broom today and cleaned up the construction site. At least the middle and top level. We loaded up the truck with a bunch of plumbing supplies that were never used and headed to Lowes. Returned and bought boards for the top of the deck railing and the pipe needed for connecting to the existing septic system. Once that is connected you know we will have the capability to flush away. Haha.

Day 183 – “Living the Dream”. Saturday, 10/30/2021. Rain, rain, and more rain. The mud and standing water at the side of the new house is incredible.
This rain is a good test for the new French drains. The drains are working perfectly.
The basement is totally dry Steve does good work.
The water is running off the roof and making a water filled rut on the side of the house.
The seamless gutter contractor is coming on Monday. Gutters should take care of that standing water. It is so cold here with this rain. Living outside like we do, you really get to experience all the weather elements. From sweating hot to freezing, we are experiencing it all. It is going to get colder still. Last night a pack of coyotes were barking up a storm in the corn field. They never came in our yard though. I am staying in the cabin at night. When the time changes, we will be sitting on our bed really early. Even tonight we showered in the dark. The leaves are changing, and the trees are looking beautiful here. I didn’t think you got such a colorful fall as I am seeing in KY.
First floor walls are mostly framed, and most plumbing is done now. Multiple shut off valves are now installed.
Love that we can walk up all the stairs in the house to all the floors.

Day 182 – “Living the Dream”. Friday, 10/29/2021. We picked up the electric water heater and expansion tank today. We have never put in an expansion tank before, but it is code here. It is installed to water heating systems to relieve excessive building pressure during the heating process.
The outside hose bib was installed by the back deck steps. These little things excite me.
I am trying to keep the deck steps mud free by adding a welcome mat. It has been raining here and the mud is building up around the house again. The mud is really disgusting, and my jeans and sneakers are constantly caked with mud.
The kitchen peninsula is framed.
The first piece of sheetrock was installed by the air handler. I just keep staring at it.
It will be 3 weeks or more before we are Sheetrocking. Justin and Steve are working in the lower level. Justin is working on the wall framing. They are taking a ton of wood.
and Steve on the copper water lines.
I really like the view from the front door. I never wanted a window in my front door before. Always hated that people could come to your front door and look in. From the inside, you can see inside easily, but from the outside you really have to be up close to see in. Also, the door looks into the foyer and not the living area. I am still a little Leary about the door though, but with our security system here I will see them before they get to the front door. Hey, I can run quickly and get dressed before they are to the door. I really don’t want to scare them away. I need to meet people!!!
We ended the day at our home away from home “Lowes”, buying more wood.
Today’s product recommendations are traveling essentials. 1) Luggage hand cart – we love this cart for easy rolling for easy cruise carry-on bags. Even when you can’t go to your room right away this is so easy to walk around the ship with. Here’s the link https://amzn.to/3s37EOw
2) This large toiletry bag is the best. Steve has the black and I have the pink. We both absolutely love them. Here’s the link https://amzn.to/3v1p6ok and picture
Day 181 – “Living the Dream”. Thursday, 10/28/2021. Looking at deck stain today. Not sure what brand we will use, but it will be a solid stain. Deck will be finished and stained next week.
Justin worked on the framing finishing touches on the lower level.
Steve worked on finishing the rough in plumbing.
And the HVAC crew was working hard also.
HVAC and plumbing rough in is almost complete.
Upper-level double sink rough in

Day 180 – “Living the Dream”. Wednesday, 10/27/2021. We were snug as a bug last night in our cabin even though it went down to 34 degrees. We are figuring that showering may become an issue as it gets colder. We may end up staying back at the Hampton Inn a few nights a week if it gets too cold to use the outside shower. Justin shows up this morning and hands me a can of Dolores Tuna that Bobi bought somewhere. Hmmm are they trying to tell me something lol.
I really like the vast openness here in KY compared to PA area. It is so beautiful. There are not so many people crowding around. The funny thing is that I want to live in an area with sidewalks and neighbors to talk to. Today they worked on more framing downstairs, the deck, and then upper-level plumbing.
Justin is putting some rattan deck chairs together.
The sun was so warm on the deck, but very cool in the old house.

Day 179 – “Living the Dream”. Tuesday, 10/26/2021. Woke up to a cold wet morning here in WV. Leaving the hotel, we noticed box cars or containers lined up behind Walmart which is located behind the hotels parking lot. They were not there when we arrived yesterday.
The drive back to KY was uneventful and smooth. We arrived home around 3pm and the HVAC guys were hard at work. We also found a broken hose bib. The water to the cabin had frozen while we were away, and the frost-free hose bib cracked. We changed vehicles and headed to Lowes for more lumber
and to pick up the sconces and pendant lights we had ordered online.
Steve also wanted to get his hair cut and the faded paint barber shop closes at 5pm. Here are some price facts. The price of gas is $3.15 here
and near Jenna’s in PA it was $3.66. The pumpkins at Kroger’s are $4.50 each and in PA they were $5.99.

We started driving back to the house to work also.

Day 177 – “Living the Dream”. Sunday, 10/24/2021 – Today we headed to Philadelphia to a soccer tournament. We drove along the Schuylkill River where we saw some people rowing. This is where rowing is a big sport.
This coming weekend the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta will take place. This is a huge event with Olympic medalists and world champions competing to have their names added to the Gold Cup trophy. It would be awesome to watch that. We only watched one game and headed to our storage unit. We packed up some stuff to take back to KY. One thing we have learned is if you have to pay for storage and moving, you should just give it away. We then back to Jenna’s for some afternoon house decorating and pizza. The kids just love decorating for Halloween. Of course, there has to be Disney involved.

Day 176 – “Living the Dream”. This is a truly relaxing time off. We are not thinking of work at all. We enjoyed watching Jacob play soccer,
had lunch out with the family, did some shopping, got some huge pumpkin,
had a private preview of the grandkids Halloween costumes, and best of all watched Tower of Terror. Tower of Terror is what we have watched on every vacation together since the movie has come out in video. Jenna’s family has continued that tradition. It is their family’s favorite movie also.

Day 175 – Friday, October 22, 2021. While we are away work is still being done on the house. The HVAC crew is working on finishing their rough in. Last night there were thousands of birds on the wires outside our hotel room. They must like a lot of electricity running through their bodies. Also, our security cameras showed coyotes in our yard back at the construction site. Now I really know after dark I must stay in the cabin.
It was wonderful to take a shower in the morning. It didn’t matter that it was cold and dark outside. The best part was not having to look for spiders. The hotel had no tea which I find rather strange. Steve says to be careful in the early hours when going to put toothpaste on your toothbrush. Colgate and Cortisone tubes look the same. Yuk!!
Trees are starting to look more colorful the closer we get to PA.
Funny. I want to say home and not PA. We met Jenna. Jamie, and the grandkids at Hershey in the dark.
How soon before they are taller than me? Jacob is really stretching to try and get taller.
We had a great time. I love these beauties!!!
And the boys kept trying to scare me.
They all love the boomerang. You notice, I watched. Rides are not my thing.
I was pleasantly surprised. I really thought I wouldn’t like it. Of course, being with grandkids can’t be beat.
I loved the Monster Mash light show.
This evening sky is so appropriate after Hershey in the Dark.

Day 174 – Thursday, October 21, 2021. Last night the farmer worked late into the night driving his combine with headlights through the fields cutting the soybean plants and collecting the soybeans. I guess when it is time to harvest you have to get it done before it rains and gets wet. To cut the soybeans, a reel pushes the plants into the combine as it moves forward very slowly. The combine cuts off the plants at ground level, then removes the soybeans from their pods and deposits them into the grain tank. Very interesting and cool to watch. We are headed for a short vacation or long weekend up to PA. We had a gorgeous day driving to WV where we are spending the night. Looks as though we are driving into some fall foliage. Hope the colors are good now in PA.
We are doing Hershey in the dark tomorrow night, then watching some soccer games over the weekend, and then ending with a town Halloween parade the grandkids are in. Busy weekend. We also are bringing some items back from storage that we need. Most important is the tile saw and some warmer clothing. Gas prices have increased since we left KY. Regular was $2.99 a gallon when we left and is $3.29 here in WV. We had a really funny thing happen at the hotel. We had a luggage cart. Steve put a suitcase and cooler on the cart. He turned to help me with something and turns around and says “did you take the cart? Where did the cart go?”. He starts running around looking. Our hotel is on a hill. He found it on the other side of the parking lot against the curb. We never heard it roll away and had a hard time finding it as it was hidden by vehicles. It rolled about 150 feet. It was hysterical and I can’t believe it never hit any of the parked cars.

Day 173 – Wednesday, October 20, 2021. This morning we were up early and headed to Lowes for more deck lumber. It was in the low 40″s
I went out later and did a video of the road around our block. So funny there is pavement to the creek.
They just repaved this road.
Never saw a road that you had to drive through a creek before. No way am I driving through a creek.
And look at this sign. OMG – a no parking in the creek sign!!!!!!
Steve and Justin worked on the deck. Stairs are looking good,
and the deck railing is coming along nicely.
and the HVAC guys finally showed up again They have been MIA for a few weeks. They are doing ten jobs at a time.
The tax assessor came by while I was out, and Steve gave her a tour of the house. Oh boy wonder what our taxes will be next year. This evening the farmer across the street used the combine to cut the soybeans.

Day 172, Tuesday, October 19, 2021. Rear deck construction continues.
Beautiful views while working.
Steve worked on the stairs. He built the stringers.
Justin worked on the railing.
It is really coming together now.
There is constant cleanup to be done.
Look no more ladders to the back door.
This evening we went to the Lincoln County 4-H Achievement Banquet for our granddaughters.
Congratulations to Marley and Koral for their awards and the extraordinary leadership they both provide to the 4H club.
Both granddaughters and their parents devote a lot of time to 4H events.

Monday, October 18, 2021 – Today started out really cool, but ended up beautiful. It went from 40 degrees to 71 degrees. Great end to the day. Look at the dry corn stalks around us. Fall is here!
It is wonderful to be able to walk the stairs. Makes working on the different levels much easier.
Worked on the plumbing in the kitchen peninsula for some of the day.
But a lot of the day was spent working on the deck. Glorious day to work outside.
By the end of the day the deck is all screwed to the house and the decking is screwed down.
You can dance on the decking!!
Tomorrow we will start the deck stairs and railing. Here’s a picture of the inside ceiling of the lower level with the plumbing pipes showing. Look closely at the below image and you can see the bolts holding the deck to the house.
It is very important to securely screw and bolt the deck to the house. Most deck collapses are because the deck pulled away from the house with the weight of the load.
Of course, we ended our day at Lowes for some more treated wood to finish the deck.
We also picked up some light fixtures. Two sconces for going up the stairway wall to the upper level,
and the outside back door light.

Sunday, October 17, 2022 – Woke up this morning to a cold 39 degrees and empty rat traps. Hmm I guess they don’t like peanut butter or because of the cold they moved into the old house. Guess no meat for dinner tonight- lol.
We actually had to scrape our car windows before heading to breakfast. Ice on the car. As the saying goes there was frost on the pumpkin. I have had a garage for 20 years. Not having one is not nice. We spent the day with family. We had so much fun I forgot to take pictures. I want to give a special thank you to Chuck for fixing our truck and also to Bobi for bringing the best Lasagna dinner over.

Saturday, October 16, 2021 – Last night the next-door neighbor stopped by. What a nice young man he is, with a lovely wife and five beautiful children. I asked him if they have any rats and he said they just started coming in from the fields. He is feeding those barn cats to keep them around his house. Later in the evening, Steve went up to the old house and came back saying, “WOW, I saw a large something run across the back porch.” He laughed and said, “and it wasn’t a cat, but it rhymes with cat. Ha-Ha “. He really thinks he is funny. We now have some rat traps we are going to set. Hope they like peanut butter.
This morning it was raining, so they worked in the house on plumbing and framing. All the waste pipes are now in. Look, how all the waste pipes connect into the lower-level main waste pipe. This main pipe will connect through the block wall behind the stairs to the outside septic pipes. It is important when running these pipes that there is a downward pitch to them for proper drainage flow.
This is where the middle level bathroom sink and toilet will be set.
Here is the rough in plumbing for the middle level bathtub shower.
Almost all of the copper pipes are done. This is the sink in the kitchen peninsula.
Pretty soon the Samsung stacking washing and dryer we bought will be installed in the laundry closet. The laundry closet is located in the hall leading to the bathroom and first level bedroom which is off the kitchen.
The basement utility room is all framed by the end of the day.
Later in the afternoon the day turned beautiful. It was so nice to enjoy the day on the back deck.
Look at the outdoor shower and our shed/cabin in the background.
Today’s product recommendations are ways to get rid of rats in your home, barn, or shed.: 1) The plain old-fashioned rat traps work the best with some peanut butter., 2) Sticky pads also work, but not all the time. They tend to get off of these., and 3) the humane way, but what do you do with the live rats. For us the humane way is for larger animals we can relocate. The choice is really up to you. There is also poison, but I would not recommend or use that at all. Here’s the links to these products:
We have never seen such beautiful sky paintings before. Steve cooks breakfast every morning for us. I am a princess for sure.
Work today was on the deck.
The posts were put in and back filled around. Can’t wait until I can walk up those back steps and sit on the deck.
The deck is connected with Lag Bolts, but we are adding carriage bolts also. The deck sits seven feet up.
The front shutters are now up.
We are going to buy rear shutters also. They will have to be nine inch special order also.

More plumbing done today. The farmers are cutting corn and building a mountain of silage.
I went to four different furniture stores as we will need some basic furniture in December. That is looking like an impossibility. Most stores are saying 16 weeks or as long as August, 2023 for getting a couch. Very little stuff available immediately.

Today was an interesting day. We went and got our Covid booster first thing in the morning. Wasn’t sure if we should or not, but I am starting to see things about cruising and boosters. We are going to be on cruise ships a lot (100 days) next year and I don’t want to be denied boarding. Anyway, so far we feel find. After that we went to Lowes to pick up the replacement bathroom vanity. Remember a few weeks ago they delivered a damaged one and we would not accept it. Ok so i received the call a new one was in. We get to Lowes and they bring it from the back. OMG – it is the same exact box we returned. I couldn’t believe it. I kept saying are you sure there isn’t another one in the back. That is the one we returned. Nope, there no others in the back they kept saying. So we get our money back and go look at the bathroom displays. We are standing there and there is a box on a pallet in the aisle. Steve says hey look your name is on that box. There’s my new vanity sitting in the bathroom aisle. Well did get our vanity. When we get home we realize there is a gouge in the counter top.
We are just going to live with it. Best part to the vanity story is that around 7pm I get an email that they are delivering my vanity on Monday. Wonder what they are bringing. We also picked up cement
and Steve and I measured and marked the rear deck size with paint.
He then dug the post holes
and mixed cement in them.
We think we have rats in the old house. I am disgusted. There is some kind of varmit poop on my outside table.
We are going to change the arrangement of cameras to see what is walking on my table. I am sooooo grossed out.

Last night, surprise surprise – we went to Lowes and picked up more plumbing stuff. Hardware shopping is a dirty job. Getting home after dark makes outside showering not so much fun!
We are onto the fresh water delivery pipes now. So that brought to my attention how we are doing old school building. There are many things that makes our house a little different than most new construction today. A few I can think of right off the bat are 1) We used plywood and not OSB boards, 2) We used cement blocks for the foundation and not a poured foundation, and 3) We are using copper water lines and not PEX. This really was brought to my attention because of what happened while we were in the Lowes cashier line. A gentleman in the next line is constantly staring at our cart loaded with copper pipes. Finally. I see he can’t take it anymore and he has to say something to Steve. He looks at Steve and says have you ever used PEX. Steve says no. We’ll Steve has never used and does not like PEX. He is old school I guess. The gentleman just keeps shaking his head and says, “it is so much better and easier to use. Also, if it freezes the pipes do not break. We proceed to pay and head to the truck. Steve looks at me and says, ” I am so tired of people making me look like a fool. PEX is garbage as far as I am concerned”. OK, now I have a mission. I get home and start internet researching PEX versus copper water lines. This is what I found. 1) Copper is more expensive than PEX, 2) Copper water lines lasts 20 years longer on the average than PEX, 3) The taste of water never changes in copper lines. The best tasting water is through copper, 4) Copper in a well insulated home or newer home does not freeze. In older poor insulated homes it can. We have never had our pipes freeze in any home Steve built. These homes were in NJ and PA. Very cold areas, and 5) Copper requires a plumber or knowledge of pipe soldering. PEX is good for the homeowner who wants to repair or do plumbing themselves. So YES, we are old school, but I really feel good that we are building a quality home and that our water will be delivered through copper to our faucets.
Steve spent this morning working on leveling and grading the ground in the back of the house. He is preparing the area for putting the back deck on.
He only worked for a few hours and the hydraulic hose that goes from the dozer blade broke on the excavator. He needed for me to operate the bucket for him to find the exact hose that was leaking.
So for the next few hours he worked on getting a new hose made and installed it,
while I went shopping, got a hair cut, returned some siding material, and picked up the special order shutters. Can’t wait to see them up tomorrow

We cleaned up the outside of the house this afternoon in preparation for excavation tomorrow.
We will then finish the back deck by the end of next week. While cleaning up we discovered a large tree frog under some plywood. Look how healthy it is from all the good fly meals.

It is amazing how much we take for granted. The amount of pvc pipe and work it takes is incredible to get your waste to the septic when we flush our toilets, wash our clothes, shower, do dishes, or use any water. Today was our normal Sunday chore day. We went to Lowes and got more plumbing pipe
and some lighting for the top kitchen glass cabinets. We were also going to get 50 more 2×4’s. That did not work out though. The lower shelves were empty and it was taking way to long for them to get the pallets of lumber down from the top shelf. So we left and will have to get them tomorrow. We wanted to get stuff done and didn’t have the patience to just hang around and wait. In the afternoon Steve worked on putting up electrical boxes on the first floor. I swept and organized the second floor and most of the first floor.

We finally got our ceiling boxes. They came in at Lowes today and I ran and got them right away.
Steve worked on more plumbing. The plumbing is about half way done.
Steve hands are disgusting from the purple primer.
I watered plants,
cleaned the old house office room and porch, and made homemade chicken soup.
It is so hot and humid here. 83 at 5pm and 76 at 7:30pm.
The house is a total disaster with wood shaving all over. Tomorrow is clean up day. We spent the evening at the County Zombie walk and the corn kid neighbors attended also

Woke up this morning and went to leave the cabin and one of the corn kids decided they did not want me to get out the door. They are scary little kids.
Today was a gorgeous sunny day. Very humid though. It is really storming again this evening. At least I got my shower before the storms rolled in. I think about Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz and hope our cabin doesn’t get pulled up into a funnel cloud. I took the truck and headed to Lowes today for more 1 1/2 inch pvc plumbing pipe. Steve worked on plumbing.
I don’t know how they can stand the smell of that purple primer. It is so strong. Justin says he likes the smell.
Justin worked on the downstairs closet and utility room walls. He also took out some of the walls and flooring by the foyer. It was too boxed in and we wanted it more open.
Back deck lumber was delivered and deck should be completed by mid next week.
CHACHING
Koral is so excited she passed her written driver’s license test and now has her permit. The youngest of Justin’s girls is now driving.

Exciting day. The plumbing has been started. Dreaming of the wonderful indoor showers that are so close now.
Headed back to Lowes this evening for more plumbing stuff and lumber of course.
Bad storms in the area this evening. Our Granddaughter’s soccer team is hunkered down in the High School boys locker room due to a tornado warning. Oh boy, we never had these issues in PA.

Although, The flies are back and I think they think I am dead. Oh boy, this is very concerning. They keep walking on me.
Steve is working on framing the refrigerator, and Double wall oven and microwave area out.
This will be the only time I will get to say I sat in the oven.
He is also working on the Kitchen Peninsula bar area. The kitchen is really large and we will be putting a counter or bar height table near the window. The kitchen bar will seat four very comfortably. Actually, I am thinking five. The area between the counter and the stairs is a small sitting area with couch and chairs. We are looking at some wall sconces for going up the stairs and the wall near the stairs. Maybe over a chair. TV will hang on the wall by the bottom of the stairs. Trying to visualize everything.
So I have to give a great big shout out to all the medical personnel I have been to in Somerset, KY since we have been here. Cora Physical Therapy was fantastic with my meniscus issue, Dr Tonya Shea new family doctor is so nice, and can’t say enough about the staff and office of our new dentist Dr Gina Saindon. I have been fortunate to have found these medical professionals. Now that the high outside work is completed and the house is water tight. Justin will not be devoting as much of his time to our project. He has been a life saver and we thank him so much for taking time from his business to assist us. We never could have accomplished all that we have without him. He will still be helping, but not putting in the long hours he has been. We ended the day with another Lowes trip for lots of plumbing supplies.
