Living the Dream Day 156

Rainy cool day. We did our normal Sunday chores and then spent the afternoon finalizing and remeasuring the kitchen layout. By the end of the day the kitchen cabinets were ordered. The master bathroom vanity layout was also finalized and ordered. Pretty soon we will be storing dishes and food in cabinets. The new kitchen will be light, warm, bright, and hopefully a bug free zone. Pictures in this post were taken at 7:30 am.

Finished the aluminum work outside. Ordering the lumber for rear deck Monday. We are planning on it being 12×16. Also, calling to get a seamless gutter contractor in. That will be the second sub contractor on the job site. Still waiting on the special order shutters.

Living the Dream Day 154

There were some beautiful skies today. You really notice them when you are constantly looking up at your husband working. Is he ok? Ok, let me check again, is he ok?

It is so much better to look up and see the beautiful art work. Because when you look down you see gross bugs and worms.

The outside really high work is completed. I am feeling really relieved. Steve is not happy with how the very peak of the front looks. It was so high and he could not get it exactly how he wanted it. I think it looks fine. Oh no don’t say that word. Fine is not good.

We have been waiting about six week’s for nine inch special order shutters for the top two windows. There is that standard excuse “COVID”. We are discussing buying the regular standard fourteen inch and clipping the top outside corners near the roof off. We are not sure what we are going to do. I keep calling the siding place and they keep saying they should be here in a few days. Our washer and dryer came today.

The leaves are falling and we should be in the house soon.

Another Lowes trip

and dinner out tonight.

Living the Dream Day 153

So we now have four coffee pots. Two in storage and two here. Do you think I love coffee?

Talking about storage. Never ever put your stuff in a storage unit while you decide where you are going to live. It is better to get rid of it. Sell it or give it away. We actually gave or sold most of our stuff, but we still have a large storage unit in PA full. We now own multiple items of the same thing, that no normal sane person should own. Yesterday at Walgreens we waited a long time for our flu vaccines even though we had appointments. There was a huge line and most of the people waiting were getting covid vaccine number two or the booster vaccine. I was surprised at how many people where we live are getting the booster vaccine. We cancelled our October and November cruises to finish the house. We have 100 days on cruise ships next year starting in January. The house will be closed in and heated by then. We can then go party, explore, and meet new people. It was a short overwhelming day today. Super high high work. The front siding is complete. The fascia board needs to be covered with aluminum tomorrow morning. Then that scaffolding will be built in the back of the house. There will be no ladders up though. It will strictly be that wooden platform out the window.

Hot hot hot day today. Back to wearing shorts and sweating. No sweat bees though.

Living the Dream Day 152

Nice warm sunny day today. Got our flu shots and carted lots of garbage to the dump.

Justin had to attend a closing today for a new four plex apartment building he purchased. So no high siding work could be done. Steve really needs assistance with the super high work. HVAC contractor came back and in a few hours they accomplished a lot upstairs. Now we have an issue with not being able to locate and purchase insulated flexible pipe. It is like the electrical ceiling boxes. They are no where to be found. COVID!!

It is hot and sunny here again. The HVAC contractor was a no show today. No text or call either. Justin and Steve worked on the front siding.

It is almost water tight. All that is left to side is the peaks on the front and the back where they can’t reach with the ladders. Then each side needs metal bent over the facia board. It is amazing how many stink bugs are around. They are everywhere.

Living the Dream Day 150

It is dark, and cold here in the mornings. Beautiful for my morning walks though. The work goes on, the work goes on. Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain. La de da de de, la de da de da. The house is moving along, but harder to focus. We need a vacation. But, we are getting her done. More work on the rear siding was done today. Have to build scaffolding tomorrow to get the peak done.

The HVAC contractor came and one of the air handlers is up in the attic now. Rafters had to be moved a little and the unit had to be taken apart to get upstairs. They will be back tomorrow to work. Really interesting brothers are the employees. The one man traveled with a circus for a few years up and down the east coast. He was the tiger handler. He has bite scars to prove it. The owner of the company had covid and was on ventilator for 6 days.

And on another note. Happy sons day to Justin and Jamie.

Living the Dream Day 149

Gorgeous cooler morning with lots of fog.

After our normal Sunday morning out, we decided we would go through the upstairs and make final decisions on the electrical. All the boxes are now up for the switches, plugs, and recessed lighting. We are putting in 18 recessed ceiling lights upstairs. The only other lighting upstairs will be a wall mounted mirror light in the master closet and some hanging lights for coming up the stairs. We marked where the smoke detectors are going, but we haven’t picked them up yet. We also need to pick up a bathroom fan.

Everyday we get a little closer.

We are thinking about canceling our October/November cruises so we can celebrate Christmas in the new house. Heading to Lowes to get another 50 2×4’s tonight. We need another 100 to finish the downstairs. And on another note. Happy daughters day to Jenna and Bobi.

Living the Dream Day 147

Friday, 9/24/2021 – I was very cold this morning, at tam it was 43. It warmed up fairly nicely to light sweatshirt weather. All the stairs are now built,

and pieces of cardboard temporarily placed on them to walk on.

The front door has some cement blocks stacked up to walk in it. It is very funny because I actually have to crawl up them. It is easier to use the ladder out the back door.

I cleaned up the first floor with a little help from Justin. It took a few hours in the morning.

Went back into the house around 3pm and OMG it looked almost as bad as before I cleaned it.

Redecorating the cabin since we have an actual bed. Bought valances to match the comforter also.

Living the Dream Day 146

Day 146 – Thursday, 9/23/2021. Last night it went down to 48 here. We used the heater in the cabin.

To keep the temperature in the 60’s.

We also had to use our portable heater for a short while in the old house. Humidity is very high in Kentucky.

It was cooler today but sunny. Stair building continued.

Little blocks of wood were fastened to the oak tread and the primed pine riser to keep them together and give extra support. The risers will be painted.

You can now walk from the front door to the top floor. The first set of steps are from the front door foyer to the middle level open kitchen gathering room. The steps will be covered with paper to protect the oak from stains until we finish them.

Here are the steps from the middle level to the upper level.

This is looking down from the upper-level bedroom area. When completed all the stairs will have railing and handrails.

Although the stairs are getting done in the house, you still have to climb a ladder to get into the house.

I cleaned the upstairs of all the excess building products drop offs.

After the cleanup was done, I had to take some pictures. This picture is taken from the master bedroom looking towards the front of the house through the second upstairs bedroom.

Here’s another picture from the master bedroom into the second bedroom on the left and the bathroom on the right. The bathroom has the skylight. The skylight will be over a double sink vanity.

Look at the main level. It is a disaster. Tomorrow, I (hero support) will work on cleaning this mess up.

Headed out to the store. Traffic was fairly heavy. Lots of tourists around.

It warmed up and the day ended beautiful with a temperature of 70.

By the evening it had cooled down again.

We ate Beef Quesadillas for dinner on the back porch with our hoodies closed up tightly.

And yummy blueberries for dessert. Eating pretty healthy for camping!!

Living the Dream Day 145

Wednesday, September 22, 2021 – Went to Lowes after dinner last night. Bought a Bosch portable table saw, recessed lighting housings,

oak stair treads, and wood to build the stringers and risers.

We got home late. It was after dark,

and we had to unload the truck due to coming rain.

We bought the oak stair treads, and they cannot get wet. We were exhausted after the long day but climbed into the most comfortable bed. Awe, what a good night of sleep. It was pouring and dark here this morning at 7:30. We headed to the county tax office to show our licenses. It was closed due to covid. I just spoke with them yesterday and they were open. Apparently, somebody tested positive last night I was told. It was rainy most of the day, windy and a lot cooler. It cleared up for a while in the afternoon.

Lowes brought our dishwasher, toilets, sinks, and shower doors.

The bathroom cabinet for downstairs was damaged and we refused delivery. Hey, they already got me on window screens and type S cement. The subcontractor delivery men said they told Lowes when they picked up that the cabinet was damaged, and they did not want to deliver it. Lowes told them take it and let the customer decide.

Steve is working on building the stairs and finalizing the design. There are three different staircases in the home and two outside the home. Lots of stairs will keep us healthy. The area where carpenters have problems in building stairs is figuring out how to build the stringers. That is calculating where each tread should be. Lots of carpenters will not build staircases. Staircase building is a specialized trade. Steve bought this Stair template tool from amazon.

Every piece of wood gets sanded very carefully.

This is the beginning of the staircase from the middle level to the upper level. You build the stringers first. The stringers are the pieces of wood that run diagonally on the side of the stairs and hold them up. The right stringer here is now attached to the upper-level floor and the middle level floor.

Steve loves his new saw. It is so easy to fold up and move around. It is easy to use and cuts really nicely.

We are thinking pretty soon we can set a table up inside. Maybe even eat in there. That is the plan for after the stairs are built, and the place is cleaned up again. It will be nice to spend my time in the new construction and not in the old house.

Today’s product recommendations are for building stairs: 1) The BOSCH table saw is easy to use, move and folds up so nice. What a great buy, and 2) Don’t forget you need some masks for protecting yourself from breathing in sawdust. Steve likes the Honeywell ones. You can breathe and work in them, but they protect your lungs. Here’s the links to these products:

Living the Dream Day 144

It has been wet and cooler lately. We are muddy and wet all the time. Last night we showered in the rain. Fun, fun times.

So, we have been placing our garbage bag in the old house at night to keep it away from the animals. Mainly the farm cats. This morning the bag in the old house was torn apart. We are thinking that the cats are getting in through the bathroom floor. So tonight, we are going to start hanging it from the middle of the porch. Just like you do when you camp to keep your garbage from the bears. I have a feeling our cameras are going to be going crazy with the cats trying to jump from the porch railing to get the bag. The detailed framing is being completed now. We want to have the inside totally ready to go and the stairs in for the HVAC contractor coming in next week.

The shower shelf and seat are framed. We had to give it a try. Lol, never thought I would be posting pictures of us in the shower.

The opening to the attic space is now framed and plywood laid for the air handler.

Upstairs is almost totally framed and ready for the plumbing, hvac, and electrical rough ins. Finally found the number in the windows after Barb told me exactly where they were. Called Lowes and surprise surprise we only had thirty days to tell them about defects. The windows were delivered August 7th. We had until September 7th to report the torn screens. We did not install them until August 27th. Guess I was a little slow, so they are going to find out how much it would cost to replace them. Again, Lowes is the only game in town.

But we are headed back there tonight for oak stair treads and a table saw. We are loving our new bed and sleeping so well. Ordered new comforter and curtains to match for our cabin. The mimosa tree is done flowering and has huge pods. It is still beautiful with the morning sun shining through.

Wet rainy day today. Worked on finishing the upstairs inside framing. Getting everything set up inside for rough in plumbing. HVAC contractor is coming next week. We are expecting it to be rainy for the next few days. The outside work will resume towards the end of the week. Went to Lowes for more wood. Prices are half of what they were when we bought the large loads for construction.

Living the Dream Day 142

Today was a down day. Got up early and the cats were in the garbage bag. There are three of them that keep hanging around. We forgot to put the garbage bag in the old house last night. When left out they climb inside it and look for food.

Got to Lowes at 8:55 am and had to wait online until the store opened at 9am. The man who unlocked the door said what is this black Friday. They are the only home improvement store game in town. Ordered our washer and dryer and picked up more plumbing supplies.

We finally broke down and bought a queen size bed this afternoon. So funny we kept thinking there would be no room in the cabin with a queen bed. We actually have more room. The new full size air bed had stretched so much. We spent the afternoon putting it together. It is so comfortable. How dumb we didn’t do this sooner. We will move it to one of the bedrooms in the new house.

Steve didn’t like the way the basement windows had aluminum on the top. So today he redid the siding on the top of the windows using his handy little siding tool. They now match the rest of the windows.

Then he finished hanging the shutters on both sides of the house.

I had some car wash fun!! Lol.

Living the Dream Day 140

Today was a down day. Justin took a long weekend off. In the morning we went out and spent thousands of dollars on more materials (siding and electrical). We are having difficulty in finding an electrical meter base. Why you ask, of course COVID. In the afternoon Steve cleaned up around the house while I worked on our books. Then off to Mellow Mushroom and our favorite “Living the Dream” waitress.

The bugs here drive me insane. The grass is literally moving with bugs. Time to put down pesticide. It is hard to put down pesticide when we are literally living outside most of the time. We will have to figure it out though.

Some more siding was applied today. We under ordered so we have to get six more squares of siding.

Went to Lowes to get some wiring supplies. Yea, thinking about electric. It is amazing when you walk in all the holiday decorations are out from Halloween through Christmas. But wait it is 86 degrees here.

It ended up that only five of the window screens were ripped and need to be replaced.

Living the Dream Day 138

We are not sure what kind of animal has been digging round holes by our house. Very strange, could it be the cats. We may have to move our cameras around to see what is out there at night.

Today was cooler with rain in the afternoon. They finished the siding and aluminum fascia covering on the rear of the shed dormer. It started raining and they worked in the rain to finish the siding on the front side of the shed dormer. As soon as siding is done, we will be calling in a seamless gutter company to put on the gutters and downspouts. That will be the first subcontracted job. We don’t own a seamless gutter machine.

Went to the store today and the shelves were empty of bottles of Spaghetti Sauce. Not sure if people are hoarding due to the covid spike in this area. The town where our grandkids go to school has the National Guard assisting at the hospital. Ugg, I thought things were getting better.

Steve did a drawing of what the house will look like with a one car garage. We may not put it on, but probably will set up for it to be added later. The debate goes on detached (Steve) versus attached garage (Dolores). Of course, I don’t do the actual work.

Then there is the never-ending bug story!

Living the Dream Day 137

Today was a very hot day. We had an appointment at DMV to get our KY real ID issued at 8am. It was packed and they have a horrible computer system that kept going down. Their systems don’t talk very well to each other. One was written in 1975 and one is new. They had to call Frankford and have it reset. We walked out after 9am with temporary ids. It will be three weeks before we get permanent ones. No work was done on the house. The thumb was hooked up on the mini excavator and a lot of time was spent playing in the dirt box. Lol. Steve said it was training. Later in the afternoon, Steve worked on drawing up the front of the house with a porch and one car garage. The electric company came by to discuss the hook up and where the service would come in. They suggested putting in underground service from the street. Steve would like above ground service though.

Living the Dream Day 136

Today was a great day here at the compound. More siding and shutters are up.

Steve loves clamps and uses them for everything. They are using a clamp and string to move the siding pieces up. This way one person is up on the ladder measuring and one is cutting and sending up the cut pieces using the string and a clamp.

Reina and Spencer stopped by for lunch and to check out the progress.

The wildlife situation keeps changing. No more sweat bees, but we are overrun with birds and honeybees now. There are thousands of birds in the corn fields. They are very vocal and loud. Justin said they are European starlings.

I emptied the dead bees and flies from one of the bee traps and refilled with apple juice. OMG, the trap started filling up with honeybees and there were hundreds of them swarming around the back porch. We don’t want to kill honeybees. We had to dump the juice and wash down everything to make them go away.

One of the nighttime cats has decided to hang out in the daytime now. We don’t want to adopt a feral cat. We keep chasing it away. Although, it will keep the mice population down as long as it stays hungry.

We are setting up the house so that a one car garage can be easily added to the front right-hand side in the spring. Steve really wants to put a large, detached garage also with a car lift. I am not interested in that at all.

Had to add some pictures of bugs. As you know I hate bugs. I think the caterpillar thing is poisonous.

Here’s a picture of the house from our closest neighbor. The kids were just dropped off by the school bus. That bus doesn’t go down the huge guardrail less hill. It goes by our house, turns around, comes back by our house, and then goes around the block to get down to the highway. Actually, I don’t drive down that hill either. Steve does though. I spend the extra five minutes and go around the block. It is much safer.

Living the Dream Day 135

We are getting lazy. Steve really needed a down day. No work was done on the house at all. We just did the normal everyday chores like mowing the lawn and laundry.

Bought a pumpkin named Wilson for the children of the corn people.

We did book another fourteen-day MSC cruise for June 2022. Maybe one of these cruises we will actually go on. Look at the corn surrounding us, it is like eight feet tall. The farmers in the area are now starting to chop it for silage.

Living the Dream Day 134

Short workday today. More siding went up on the shed dormer side. High work is slow going.

Now that the home is closed in it is easy to navigate to get to the different floors.

I went through the nineteen window screens and seven of them have some kind of rip. Lowes needs the number inside each of the windows that have a ripped screen in order to replace them. They said no problem replacing them once I get them the numbers.

Steve decided he has to do a little project management tomorrow. He is going to make a daily schedule of what he needs to accomplish everyday through October 20th. We currently have not been following a schedule. Whatever gets done each day gets done. You know that is the retired life way. As far as me, I am back to walking every day, loving the farmland serenity, and getting adjusted to the new territory and the neighborhood dogs.

It was a really exciting day. The front door is in and the landing when you walk in is framed.

While that work was being done,

I went and had a fun date with my Granddaughter.

Living the Dream Day 132

We hooked up a camera last night to try and figure out what was going in our garbage bag. So funny the alarm kept going off. We had three different cats and two different skunks. It was a busy back porch and we didn’t sleep well with the notifications.

Today was spent working on the Dog house dormers.

By the end of the day, the dog houses are finished and some shutters are up. Wow, what a difference it made.

I spent time supervising the shutter process.

Much cooler here now. I keep discovering new KY bugs. YUK.

Tomorrow the front door goes in. Headed back to Lowes tonight for more lumber so the inside front door landing can be built.

All bath room faucets are here now. We went with Moen. The dishwasher and shower doors were ordered today.

Living the Dream Day 131

Today is the first day since we started this project that we slept a little later. Got up at 7am. Steve didn’t start work until almost 9am. The basement floor looks great today.

More work was done on the siding around the front dog house dormer. Before the work could get started though they had to built a scaffold to work off of.

Then it started raining in the afternoon so the work day was cut short.

Living the Dream Day 130

Last night it got into the 50’s. But quickly warmed up today to 90 in the shade. Look at the steam coming off the cabin as the sun rises.

Today was mostly about getting the cement basement floor done. The first concrete truck came at 8am and the wheel barreling began.

Justin wheel barreled most of the time and Steve raked, tampered, and used a story pole to check the levelness.

As each section was completed the rebar was hammered down under the concrete. At 9:15 am the second truck was waiting to take over. By 9:30am the first had emptied the six yards into our basement. It was a perfect estimate. The first truck did half the basement.

Bobi came over as back up for wheel barreling. She was not needed though for that. She cleaned the tools and wheelbarrel up as needed.

The second truck was done about 11am. Each truck stopped at the end of our driveway and the drivers hosed them out real good. You don’t want that cement to harden in the truck.

Those trucks remind me of bees with a big stinger coming out the front.

It was a gorgeous day with very low humidity.

That made the concrete dry quicker. Justin used the brake and bent metal and finished around two of the basement windows.

Steve went back into the basement after lunch and started troweling and smoothing the cement floor. Around 3:30 it was drying so fast that Justin had to go in and use a sponge to wet the top back up while Steve continued troweling. They are both still working on it now. Steve will have to go over it one more time. Kneeling on those prayer boards is tough. Those boards are over twenty years old. So the wax on wax off will continue for a few more hours. They will sleep well tonight. It is four thirty and Steve is saying he doesn’t care what I say, he is an old man. So now they are both troweling.

Living the Dream Day 129

Happy Labor day everyone! Today at our building site there was a lot of hard labor going on for sure. I am thankful for all the hard work being done on the high dog house dormers. They are getting there.

I made some new friends today. My new friends don’t carry a conversation very well and they don’t eat a lot. Wilson is coming later to visit also.

Tomorrow is finish the basement floor day. Cement truck will be here at 8am. Steve is a little nervous about getting the floor absolutely level. He has not done a lot of basement floors. I know he will do an excellent job. Our new refrigerator works so well that we have beer slushy tonight.

Bought a fire pit for our patio. Thinking ahead.

Living the Dream Day 128

Today was our no work Sunday. We had a birthday lunch and celebration for our three oldest granddaughter’s birthdays.

The corn children even came by the cabin to celebrate.

Steve set up his new beverage refrigerator. It will be nice to have room for some food in our refrigerator now. Trying to keep hydrated in the hot sun takes a lot of water.

Living the Dream Day 127

Looking ahead we purchased the electrical sockets, switches and boxes. We are looking at service panels and wiring now. Another step in this journey. It is amazing how many electrical boxes you need for a new house. There are one gang, two gang, and three gang boxes. We have to locate the three gang. Electrical supplies are very limited at Lowes right now. Shelves are bare and wire prices have been going up. Of course you know what is going to happen. Lol. After we purchase the wire we need. the prices will drop. Cooler temperatures are here now. We are hardly running the air conditioning in the cabin at night. It does heat up a little in the middle of the night. It is like cows in the barn, our body heat heats up the cabin. The skunk was around last night again spraying away. We think they are living under the old house. You definitely can smell the skunk in the old house. On a lighter note we have a cute yard bunny!

A lot was accomplished today. The siding was completed up to the dog house dormers.

We also have some crazy racing ants.

Tomorrow is our off day and we are going out to eat and having a big birthday celebration for our three Granddaughters. They are now 16, 18, and 22. They are getting old.
