Living the Dream Year 5 Day 30 – The Wellington – Julianna 8th grade light of Christ award for respect, trim in main level office and bedroom

Year 5, Day 30, “Living the Dream”. Friday, 5/30/2025. The Wellington – Finishing up the trim in both the office and the other main floor bedroom. Soon we will be setting those rooms up.

You can always tell when you are coming to the end of building a new house. The tools start moving to the door and out. Julianna received this month’s 8th grade light of Christ award for Respect at her school. That’s a pretty impressive award. Congratulations to her. Of course, congratulations are due to Jenna and Jamie for raising such a great daughter. They are also wonderful Christian examples.

Year 5, Day 28, “Living the Dream”. Wednesday, 5/28/2025. The Wellington – The hardwood flooring is down in the last bedroom that will have hardwood flooring.

There is only three places that still need hardwood flooring put down. It includes the kitchen pantry and the landing at the bottom of the stairs to the upper level balcony. The balcony itself also needs hardwood flooring laid down.

The Closet door was hung in the middle bedroom/closet in the afternoon.

Year 5, Day 27, “Living the Dream”. Tuesday, 5/27/2025. The Wellington – After the overindulging weekend heading back to an exercise class seemed very prudent. The office/bedroom across from the laundry center is being completed.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 24 – The Wellington – Laundry center complete

Year 5, Day 24, “Living the Dream”. Saturday, 5/24/2025. The Wellington – The dryer was stacked on the washer in the new Laundry center and hooked up.

We over estimated how much hardwood flooring we needed by three boxes. Lowes is great to purchase through because they take almost everything back. A $399.69 credit at Lowe’s today. That’s enough to buy donuts!!

Laundry center shelves were built and the center is complete. Although, there is still a little bit of touch up painting and adding broom and mop wall hangers. The boards are cut and sanded in the garage and then brought up to the main level to assemble. Another custom job almost complete.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 23 – The Wellington – Laundry center tile grouted and trimmed, Vultures

Year 5, Day 23, “Living the Dream”. Friday, 5/23/2025. The Wellington – Grouted the laundry center floor tile. Cut, painted, hung, puttied, sanded, and caulked the baseboard trim in that area. Painted, puttied, added knobs, and added casement around the laundry double doors.

Moving the washing machine back in and adding the stacking hardware was easy. Lifting the dryer a little harder. Daily weight lifting and exercising and I am still not large enough to assist with that. Justin will be by this evening to assist with stacking the dryer on the washer.

Can’t wait to have some shelving. That is another days project. Tomorrow the shelves will be built and added. Permanent shelves will be built. Not like the portable shelf organizer under the bathroom sink purchased from Amazon. Love those Amazon portable shelves. https://amzn.to/4dHEFpm

The closet door in the corner bedroom was also hung.

State Farm has set up a catastrophe trailer in the Lowes parking lot. State Farm is here for their insured tornado customers. At the post office today all talk was about the tornado and where everyone was at that time. One employee was 1 mile away. He watched it and said the sounds were horrible. Another woman retreated to a closet while her husband watched TV. They all said that if you take Interstate 75 south, you will see where it crossed the highway. It looks like a war zone. Very humbling. The amount of huge houses just leveled is incredible.

On my drive back from Lowes there is a feeding frenzy going on in the road. Some Turkey vultures are eating a cat. My car approaching scares them away at first. I sit and try to decide. Should I get out and move this scene to the side of the road? They all come back in. Roadkill is an important food source for vultures. They are standing on her and ripping pieces off. My hope is that the owner of this kitty does not see this. My first instinct is to stop the car and move everything to the side of the road. But then I stop and think. It is is a very curvy road with vehicles going really fast. Nope, I don’t want to end up as the next carcass. Even though it is disgusting and sad, it is the “circle of life”. Vultures are carrion feeders or scavengers. They help to maintain ecological balance by removing carcasses and preventing the spread of disease. They help breakdown carcasses recycling nutrients back into the environment. Imagine if there were none and our fields, and woods were loaded with deceased animals. Along with the vultures I am sure there are plenty of flies. Flies are drawn to a carcass just as much as the vultures are. They deposit their eggs in all openings. Even in the tears these vultures are making. Maggots will then begin to grow. Maggots are the larval stage of flies. Okay even though this is the circle of life, the thought of maggots really turns me off.

The Wellington looks so nice with flags for Memorial Day.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 22 – The Wellington – Laundry closet area tile, and doors

Year 5, Day 22, “Living the Dream”. Thursday, 5/22/2025. The Wellington – Laundry area work day. Before work started we made sure all our laundry was done. We will be without a washer and dryer for a few days. Trying to avoid going to the the laundromat. Remembering those cabin days with fondness !! Ha HA https://deestimes.com/2021/05/22/living-the-dream-day-21/

Moved the washer and dryer out of the laundry closet.

A rag was stuffed in the top of the drain pipe. This seals the drain from sewer gases. It also prevents unpleasant odors from escaping into the home. Stuffing a rag into a drain opening is a quick and easy way to prevent sewer gas from escaping. Do not use a rag for long-term sealing! A rag is not a perfect seal. Breathing in sewer gas fumes can cause respiratory issues. Sewer gas includes hydrogen sulfide (smells like rotten eggs) and methane (which is flammable).

1/2 inch cement board was screwed down.

Cemented the tile down with thinset,

Hung the closet double doors.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 21 – The Wellington – Closet doors

Year 5, Day 21, “Living the Dream”. Wednesday, 5/21/2025. The Wellington – No tornado last night. Just lots of wind, and rain. But we were prepared with our under stair shelter. Next house a real shelter!

Today it is a sunny gorgeous day. Steve mowed the back field and put up two closet doors. We are almost to punch list time.

There is a lot of grass/weeds growing out in the back field. We are not sure what they are. But the field is green. Anyone know what kind of plants they are?

The Mother’s day flowers received eleven days ago are done. I was able to pull out the good flowers and put together two little vases. These vases still look fresh and beautiful. You think they will last another eleven days?

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 20 – The Wellington – More yard work and another dirt pile smoothed out, tornado watch cleaned out under stairs

Year 5, Day 20, “Living the Dream”. Tuesday, 5/20/2025. The Wellington – This train is on the same schedule as my gym class.

Another dirt pile is gone. We spread the dirt to fill in over the septic area. Yard is looking good.

Tornado watches are up for this evening again. Everyone is really concerned and neighbors are coming over if the weather in fact does get bad. We cleaned the area in the lower level under the stairs. We can all sit in there and be as protected as we can be. The lower level of this home has windows in every room. The neighbor’s mobile homes are not where you want to be if a tornado approaches. Ranches without basements also offer little protection.

Of course the tornado that hit our area last week was an EF4. I don’t think our home will withstand a direct hit from an EF4 tornado.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 18 – The Wellington – Happy Birthday Jenna, Bob Evans, Bourbon Brood, Hummingbirds, Balcony ready to use.

Year 5, Day 18, “Living the Dream”. Sunday, 5/18/2025. The Wellington – Happy Birthday Jenna. Have a great day! We went out to Bob Evans for breakfast and celebrated you. It was a glorious day that you were born.

Bob Evans is right where highway 27 in Somerset is closed due to Friday night’s tornado. The police were at the intersection stopping people. You could hear all conversations in the restaurant were centered around the tornado. If you have been affected by the tornado. Kroger has cases and bottles of water outside their store for you to take free. Thank you Kroger.

Picked up and planted more in the front beds.

Set up the balcony now that it is fully stained. The balcony appears due to the lighter solid color stains we used. We feel like we are at a shore home. The wind, the sun, and the smell of sunscreen. Of course the view is not the same.

The sound of the cicadas is growing louder. This brood of cicadas are emerging in Kentucky after 17 years underground. Kentucky is the epicenter of the 2025 cicada emergence. This is brood 14 also known as the “Bourbon Brood,” . You will know what they are by their red eyes and loud singing. I read that they can be as loud as the basketball crowds at Rupp Arena. The cicadas won’t bite you or harm you in any way; they will just be a nuisance. Local wildlife, such as snakes, foxes and turkeys, will get extra protein from the cicadas. The cicadas are expected to peak during Memorial Day and die off near the end of June. I guess our Memorial day picnic will be loud. They are in the woods which are pretty far from our house and they are getting louder every day. Experts say they can get as loud as a jet engine. The only time I can remember hearing these was in Pennsylvania in June 2021. They were loud and the kids loved picking them up. I was grossed out. https://deestimes.com/2021/06/18/living-the-dream-day-48/ and https://deestimes.com/2021/06/19/living-the-dream-day-49/ Going to take a walk to the trees to immerse myself in their sound. Only the males can produce the sound. Their first song is to encourage other males to congregate in sunlit trees. Another choral song is then made to attract females. The males will die shortly after mating, and the females will begin laying their eggs.” Female cicadas can deposit 200-600 eggs in trees and shrubs. The hummingbirds don’t seem to mind them. We put a hummingbird feeder out last night and had one feeding already this morning.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 17 – The Wellington – Picked up Plate Compactor, tornado set down ten miles away, father daughter dance, balcony floor stained, worms are back video

Year 5, Day 17, “Living the Dream”. Saturday, 5/17/2025. The Wellington – Yesterday evening we picked up the Plate Compactor. It is really heavy and took three guys to load it into the truck.

Getting it off the truck took the mini excavator and some chains. Look at this Steve needs a step ladder to get into the bed of the truck – haha

In the evening Governor Beshear declared a state of emergency and tornadoes were expected in Kentucky. Looking at the weather report we saw hail was expected also. We decided to clear the garage for the truck. It just fits in.

So she sat safe in the garage all night as the storms and code red notifications kept coming.

Steve turned his phone off because he couldn’t stand the sounds of the code red notifications. We stayed in bed and basically ignored it. We have had so many cry wolf notifications in the past where we ran for shelter. We decided there was no reason to get out of bed this time. This morning we found out that tornadoes had ripped through 55 miles starting 10 miles away from us. In fact yesterday morning, I had met friends for coffee right there. Okay, next code red I am getting out of bed and going where I am not sure. We need a storm shelter in the ground I am thinking.

The third bedroom is painted and the balcony floor is stained.

Super windy day with no internet due to storm. At least we have electric and a house standing. Some work had to be done on the driveway due to the tremendous rain last night.

Beautiful day today though. Look at this video. The worms are back. The land is coming back.

Julianna and Jamie are headed to the father daughter dance. So beautiful and heartwarming to see these photos.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 14 – The Wellington – Middle bedroom spackling completed, mulched front, setup front walk, crop drone, Bore bee trap set

Year 5, Day 14, “Living the Dream”. Wednesday, 5/14/2025. The Wellington – The spackling is completed in the middle bedroom. There are a few closets that still need to be spackled and the garage. We are getting to the end of this job.

In the afternoon we picked up some organic hardwood mulch and placed it around the front yard plants. It looks so nice.

Lowes is delivering 3,730 charcoal colored pavers tomorrow. We had enough dense pack stone in a pile to set up where the front walkway will be.

We put out the Carpenter Bee trap after hearing the drilling going in the railing again. The pile of saw dust is growing. We plugged the hole up with a wooden dowel. That bee is stuck in his tomb along with the babies that will emerge in August. The first bee in was a wasp. Then we killed a Bore Bee and placed him in the clear container for bait. The scent is supposed to attract more bore bees.

The big excitement of my day was coming home. I saw this huge drone flying over the wheat fields. Check it out in the pictures and video. It was flying over the wheat fields the next block over. Wonder what is being sprayed. I went home and made sure my windows were closed. The drone was cool though.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 11 – The Wellington – Mother’s Day planting

Year 5, Day 11, “Living the Dream”. Sunday, 5/11/2025. The Wellington – Happy Mothers Day everyone. And a special love filled mother’s day wish to my daughter Jenna, my daughter-in-law Bobi, and Grand daughter Reina. Without my children I would not be a mother today. No fur babies in this house.

Woke up to the smell of flowers and a gorgeous sunrise. The sunlight just beamed beautifully over the field. Then it was out to breakfast at Bob Evans. We had to wait to be seated because it is Mother’s Day.

Went back to Walmart and bought another Japanese Maple tree. Oh and the car wash gave me a yellow carnation. That yellow carnation is loving its new home nestled in with the other flowers in the Mothers Day flower arrangement.

These Bore Bees are eating our deck as we stain it. You can hear them in the wood and actually see the dust piles growing. It was chemical attack time. We sprayed bee killer in every hole we could find. Everytime we see one Steve goes out and gets him with a racket. He is the Bore Bee killer.

In the afternoon we started planting. Of course we wait till the sun is beating down on us and the sweat bees are swarming. But it is looking great. Tomorrow we will be getting mulch.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 10 – The Wellington – Mother’s Day Love, Japanese maple, making pizza with Justin and Bobi

Year 5, Day 10, “Living the Dream”. Saturday, 5/10/2025. The Wellington – Feeling the love today. The freshest nicest Mother’s Day flowers were delivered today from Jenna and family. They came from Hillside Florist in Stanford. KY https://g.co/kgs/GLve2zJ They are so gorgeous and perfect they actually look fake. I have never seen such lovely flowers. Thank you Jenna, Jamie, Julianna, Jacob, and Joshua. I am certainly a spoiled Mom/Grandma.

We bought a Japanese maple tree today. I have been looking for one all over, but they were expensive. Look at this, $19.97 from Walmart.

Tomorrow is planting day. Need to get mulch next week also. We also picked up more solid stain for balcony railing.

Justin and Bobi came by with a beautiful porch plant. It has become the centerpiece of the plants on our front porch. It is gorgeous and just perfectly fit in with the other front porch flowers. They also brought me a Maple tree. I have the sweetest kids and Grand kids. Thank you Justin, Bobi, Reina, Spencer, Marley, and Koral. We spent the evening together making and eating homemade pizza. It was a really nice relaxing evening.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 9 – The Wellington – Leveled out one dirt mound in front yard, Labadee, Haiti port no longer being stopped at, truck side step added

Year 5, Day 9, “Living the Dream”. Friday, 5/09/2025. The Wellington – Well an apple a day keeps the doctor away. What do you think a muffin a day will do?

Nice days are here and it means outside work. Another pile of dirt is moved around and leveled into our yard. Two more piles to work on.

Had a step installed on the truck. Steve says he did it for me. But I know he was even having trouble getting into the new white beast. It is so much easier now to get in and out. The out was horrible before the step. You literally jumped out of the truck.

We are looking at fencing for lining the new driveway we may put in to the back fields.

Since the US State Department issued a level 4 ” do not travel advisory” to Haiti. I have been waiting to be notified about our next scheduled cruise. Sure enough, received it today. Royal Caribbean for our next cruise will not be stopping at Labadee, Haiti due to civil unrest in that country.

I love Labadee. It is my favorite port for a beach day. After receiving this notification, I felt the need to look at some of our times in Haiti. Therefore I am sharing links to three of our days in Labadee, Haiti

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 8 – The Wellington – Main bath saddle installed, hardwood flooring completed on main level except for one bedroom, yummy English muffins, sweet chicken salad

Year 5, Day 8, “Living the Dream”. Thursday, 5/08/2025. The Wellington – Happy Birthday Mary!!! Main bath saddle installed. Hardwood flooring is completed on main level of home, except for one bedroom.

Lunch out at the Serendipity and then flower shopping with a friend. The chicken salad was the sweetest I have ever had. The sweetness was overwhelming. It must have been a traditional Southern recipe where a dressing that is boiled with sugar is used. For my northern taste it was not very edible.

Then home to find an early Mother’s Day present waiting that is so yummy. Wow is all I can think as I crunch my way through a mini English muffin or two. Haha. I feel loved and full. Thank you Jenna, Jamie and family.

Living the Dream Year 5 Day 3 – The Wellington – Corner bedroom hardwood flooring started

Year 5, Day 3, “Living the Dream”. Saturday, 5/03/2025. The Wellington – It’s the 151st Kentucky Derby day! The race traditionally takes place the first Saturday in May. The first leg of the Triple Crown 2025, the Kentucky Derby, takes place today. It is held at the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. It takes place rain or shine and it is rainy today. They only stop races for lightning. The gates opened at 8am. Nineteen 3-year-old horses took the track for the 1 1/4 mile run for the 6:57 ET post time. Journalism entered the event as the favorite at 3-1. Sovereignty from 16 post was the winner. Journalism claimed the second spot, while Baeza finished in third. No horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from the number 17 post. Another interesting fact is that 125,000 mint Julep cocktails will be sold today and tomorrow. More than 10,000 bottles of Kentucky Bourbon will be used to make those Julep cocktails. We didn’t attend the races, but I spent the day creating a hat for our Newcomers lunch on Monday. Steve worked on putting the hardwood flooring down in the corner bedroom.
