Year 5, Day 264 “Living the Dream”. Monday, 1/19/2026, Day 14 of 22 day California Zephyr cross country trip, followed by a California coastal drive, and then a 14 night Mexico Cruise – Day 4 of 5 night Cabo Overnight Cruise from Los Angeles on Quantum of the Seas – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico 1pm – Overnight – 1pm. It was dark when we started our adventure this morning. We were doing a Whale Watching Experience and Photo Safari.

We met in the Royal Theater on Deck 4 at 6:50am. There we sat for an hour then boarded a tender.

We sat in the hull of the boat. It was really rocky traveling to the Cabo San Lucas pier. The air smelled like burning garbage.

At the dock we boarded a rigid inflatable boat that sat 20 people. We probably did 50 mph out of the port. We passed by the Arch of Cabo San Lucas.

We did see a lot of humpback whales. Humpback whales are shy. Therefore we viewed them mostly from a distance. The average time from when a whale goes down in the water and comes back up in this area is 6 to 8 minutes. They can stay down 45 minutes. Humpback whales cannot eat you. They can take you in their mouth but will spit you out. Their throats are only as large as a fist. A sperm whale can swallow you. It is a nice warm day out on the water. Female whales are larger and stronger than males. Smaller scared up whales are males. Whales have two blow holes on the top of their heads. In this area there have been over 5,000 individual whales identified.. There are more than 200,000 whales world wide. Whales stick close to shore here because they are mating and having babies. Close to shore they can protect themselves better. Humpback whales die from natural causes like old age and disease. More commonly, they die from human activities such as vessel strikes (ship collisions) and entanglement in fishing gear. Killer whales (orcas) are their primary predators, often targeting calves. Climate change also poses a threat by disrupting prey distribution and foraging, stressing populations. Humpback whales generally live around 45-50 years in the wild. We rode in the boat from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. There were a lot of other whale watching boats chasing down those whales also. It is kind of sad that all these boats would go speeding around chasing down whales. No one was hurting them, but imagine how they feel.

It was nice to head back to the Quantum away from the whale feelings.

The ship spa does some interesting procedures. Nope not for me on a cruise ship. Spa for me is a manicure and pedicure.

Dinner entertainment!
