Year 5, Day 161 “Living the Dream”. Wednesday, 10/08/2025 – Day 2 of 30 day trip to Rome, Italy with a Mediterranean cruise and a transatlantic cruise back to Bayonne, NJ. Hey did you sleep last night? No sir I did not. Flying in a Boeing 777-200ER in economy is not the most pleasant way to travel. However, we used minimal airline miles. We try to travel a lot so being frugal is wise. There was a light breakfast of yogurt, granola, and a fig bar served for breakfast before we started descending.
We started our descent to the runway of the Rome-Fiumicino Airport around 9:30am and touched down at 10am. It was a 20 minutes before we were at the gate. We quickly walked off the plane and after a long walk was through customs in about 15 seconds. Which was as fast as they could stamp our passport. Sitting waiting for our luggage it is strange thinking, my maternal grandparents came from Italy. It’s like going back to 1/2 of my roots. We took the free airport shuttle to the Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport. We were checked in our room by 11am. The hotel employees are really nice, the hotel is clean, and the pizza in the restaurant is excellent. From our room you can see the Simbruini Mountains and other parts of the larger Apennine Mountain range. What a beautiful backdrop to the region.
We hung at the hotel and relaxed. Tomorrow we are headed into Rome early for a Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman forum guided tour we booked through Viator.
