Year 3 Day 319 – “Living the Dream”. Saturday, 3/16/2024. Clifty Hill 2 – The Bradford Pear white trees are blooming. The Bradford pear, also known as the “Callery” pear, is a popular ornamental tree native to Asia. The trees were introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture as ornamental landscape trees in the mid-1960s. They are beautiful but have a pungent stench. Some say their smell reminds them of dead fish, others say it reminds them of a middle school gym locker, urine, or baby poop. They are considered invasive in the KY countryside. The weird thing is their thorns can puncture vehicles tires. The trees “break easily during ice and windstorms. Ohio, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania have banned, or the law is coming into effect this year to ban the sale of these trees. The UK College of Agriculture is partnering with local groups to entice homeowners to replace the trees. The Bradford Pear Bounty Program exchanges a Bradford pear tree for a free young native replacement tree. They do make the countryside beautiful though. It is a glorious spring, and the real estate market is picking up.
