Year 6, Day 83. “Living the Dream”. Wednesday, 7/22/2026, Clifty Hill 3. Last night we had some wicked thunderstorms and torrential rains. It rained about 3 inches in one hour at one point. The heavy wind was reported to have gusted up to 70 miles per hour. Those high winds and driving rain broke our realtor sign and took it flying down the road. This morning we found a huge frog up on our deck. Remember our deck is eleven feet high. A patio chair was across the yard and the garbage can took a windy roll and even a ground water drain lifted up out of the ground. The yard drains were doing their work though. Everything in and around the house was super dry. It is really important when building to ensure you take water considerations. That includes French drains directed away from the house, proper grading of the property and driveway, plastic under cement floors, and house gutters and leaders large enough for the weather in your area with leader pipes going to a pipe underground that leads away from the house. Those are the things that happened building the Wellington.
Clifty Hill 3 build site was very wet. Some of the trenches around and away from the foundation needed to be reopened enabling the water to drain away.
The rest of the day was spent preparing for Friday’s concrete delivery. The gravel was leveled in the five foot crawl space under the master bedroom area. After it was level, 6 mill plastic was laid down over all the gravel. The cement on Friday will be poured on top of this plastic. The plastic layer acts as a vapor barrier inhibiting moisture seepage from the ground up to your cement floor preventing mold. This floor will be nice and dry. Additionally, the plastic keeps the concrete from settling into the gravel and soil below at pour time. It also keeps any potentially harmfull gases like radon from coming up through the concrete into your homes foundation.
