Year 2 – Day 123, Monday, August 29, 2022. Steve was up and working outside by 7am. The corners were done by 11am. You always build the block corners of a structure first ensuring they are level vertical and horizontal. All corners need to be the exact same height. Steve is thrilled the building is perfectly square.
After the corners you just string a line. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? A good mason will put up five to six hundred block a day. The top block you see in the corners will be the row out of the ground with a cap block on top before the wood sill. The rest of our block for the garage was delivered around noon, but it was way too hot to work in the sun laying block in the afternoon.
Steve decided he had enough of mixing cement by hand, so he purchased a cement mixer from Harbor freight. He tried to buy the floor model. No luck he had to get one in a box. A real pain in the butt to put together and he is missing two bolts at the end of the day. He had a gas-powered mixer in PA, and he wanted an electric motor one. He says Electric motor is much better. It took him all afternoon to put it together.
Those sweat bees are horrendous. Our whole front door is coated with them and every shovel and rake handle. They just wait for me to come outside and then it is “ATTACK”. They are getting worse. I have to wear a sweatshirt with a hood outside now.
It was the same a year ago. It is supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow so we covered the block with tarps. It is very hard to lay block when they are waterlogged.
