Looking for a great extended family vacation? Try Avon, NC. It is a wonderful place to just hang with the family for a week. We always do an oceanfront house rental with a boardwalk walkway over the dunes to the beach. There are many other options for location (sound side, canal side, ocean side), but we like sitting on the deck and watching the waves, and the great sunrises.

October is a nice time to go. Kids are back in school, prices are more affordable, the beaches are quieter, the weather is cooler, the water is a nice comfortable temperature, traffic on and off the island is less congested, and the fishing is fantastic.

You can fish either from the Avon fishing pier, the beach or go on a party\charter fishing boat. Fishing from the beach requires a NC Coastal Recreational Fishing License. You can buy a 10 day license online before your leave for vacation. Doing it online means you can print at home and have in your tackle box. The cost is $11.00 plus a small transaction fee. Fishing from the pier or a party\charter boat does not require you to purchase a license. Your fishing will covered under the pier or boat owners license.

In Avon you have easy access to any supplies you need for the week. There is a Food Lion Grocery store where the prices are good for all your staples, plus they sell a large variety of beer and wine. Although, we always bring a lot of stuff with us. At the end of the page you will see items I recommend bringing. If you want any other alcoholic beverage besides beer and wine you have to drive about 15 minutes to the state liquor store in Buxton. There are also many gift shops, a Dollar Tree, an Ace Hardware store, a Dairy Queen,

a specialty donut shop where you can even get Maple Bacon donuts or any kind of weird donut flavors, and a few pizza restaurants in Avon. Don’t forget to get lots of Salt Water taffy for your friends back home.

One of the most popular seafood restaurants ‘Dirty Dick’s Crab House’ is located adjacent to the Food Lion. It is a very easy to walk all over Avon. Just be a little careful crossing route 12. Route 12 is the highway that goes from Nags head to Hatteras.
If you want to get away from just lazing on the beach. Try a surf board lesson. Our family had a great time with that.

Some of the other things you should do is to take a ride to Hatteras and use the NC Ferry system to cross over to Ocracoke. This is a great free way to spend the day. Also you should visit the lighthouses, see the museum in Hatteras, and go to the NC Aquarium in Rodanthe. All of these things are a little bit of a drive though.

We have stayed at the O’Sun a few times. The location is great and the house has a great design. Watch the three videos below to get a good idea of what to expect of this house. These videos were taken in October, 2020. Every year the home changes a little depending on how much updating is done.
We never leave home without a travel alarm clock and a mini maglight. The ones we own we bought from Amazon and are listed below
For those beach days bring some chairs and fill your fishing box with tackle for your surf fishing. The chairs below are fantastic and they serve as a cooler also. Love them
I love coffee and have this coffee maker that we use on vacations only. Easy to set up and use. We always bring an electric griddle, makes cooking so much easier.
